A solar pump is about the closest thing to a windmill that money can buy — it asks nothing but sunshine and quietly fills a tank all day long. For the back forty where there's no power pole in sight, it's often the cheapest water you'll ever pump.

How solar pumping works

It's simpler than most folks expect. A small array of solar panels sits on a post beside the well and makes electricity whenever the sun's up. That power runs through a controller — the brain of the system — and down the hole to a DC pump sitting in the water. The controller matches the pump to whatever the panels are making, so the pump speeds up on a bright afternoon and eases off under a cloud, all on its own. No batteries required, no meter, no monthly bill from the co-op.

Where solar shines

That last one comes up a lot. If an old mill has gotten to where it's more repair than it's worth, a solar pump in the same well is often the sensible next chapter — and you can leave the tower standing as a landmark. What a system includes

A complete solar pump setup isn't just a panel and a pump. We size and set the whole thing: the panels and their mount, the controller, the pump itself down the hole, the wire that ties it all together, and a float switch in the tank so the pump shuts off when the tank's full and starts again when it draws down. Set right, there's very little to think about after we leave.

How it runs, day and night

A solar pump pumps while the sun is up — most of a system's water gets made in the bright hours around midday. The trick is a storage tank sized to your herd: it fills through the day and carries the animals overnight and through a cloudy stretch. Pump to storage, let the tank do the rest.

Cheap to run, once it's in

The panels are the cost up front. After that, sunlight is free — there's no fuel to haul, no meter turning, and no wire bill from stringing power across the property. A solar pump has few moving parts and sits sealed down in the well, so the running cost is about as low as pumped water gets. For a lot of Central Texas places, it pays for itself in the electric line you never had to build.

Does a solar pump work on cloudy days?
Yes, just slower. The pump speeds up in bright sun and eases off under cloud, so a gray day means less water — not no water. That's exactly why we size a storage tank to carry you through the dim stretches.
What happens at night?
The pump rests when the sun goes down. Everything you need overnight was pumped into the storage tank during the day, so the herd drinks from the tank while the pump sits idle and starts again at first light.
Is solar cheaper than running electric out to the well?
On a remote site, almost always. Trenching a wire run across a pasture is expensive per foot, and then you pay the meter every month after. Solar has one cost up front and free sunlight after that. We'll help you pencil out your particular spot.
Can I put a solar pump in my old windmill well?
